Industry standards for H&S?

New Zealand needs to build a culture where risk management is a normal process in the events and venues industry, says Wayne Middleton of Reliance Risk.
The new health and safety laws came into effect in May of this year, but five months on the industry is still having trouble coming to terms with the processes.

'A lot of arguments I'm seeing is that companies can't afford to do safety. If you don't have the money you shouldn't be in the game.'
Other challenges observed since the introduction of the new Act include lack of understanding of the upstream-downstream concept as a duty holder; slow reaction to changes due to stakeholder pushback; lack of industry standards in health and safety; no systematic sharing of risk management information; and lack of clarity around what tools to use and when.
