Over the last few months there has been an incredibly large amount of negative comments around tourism in general to the point where, unfortunately, there is a backlash of public opinion in some quarters. Our industry bodies are working with the Government to make sure they understand the value of the sector and the vital role it plays in the economy. Granted it has been a slow and arduous process for everyone concerned but we must put some faith and trust in these organisations to advocate on our behalf. Sometimes the effect of keyboard warriors popping up with their opinions can have a result contrary to the one intended. The hours some spend on social media platforms could be better used future proofing their own business. Of course, it is important to retain compassion for those businesses and individuals who are struggling. One area of support for people doing it tough is to look towards positive trends in these challenging times - border openings, international travel, vaccine rollout timeframes are constantly Travel and tourism personality Lynn Matthews passed away recently and is being remembered as a fun person, dedicated to the industry. Lynn is best known as director of sales for Jet Park Hotels, where she worked for some 20 years. However, those with a longer memory, will also recall Lynn’s time in various roles with Air New Zealand – Air New Zealand Holidays, Air New Zealand Destinations and HOTPAC, the airline’s hotel booking system. Her various roles with the carrier spanned from 1989 to 2000. Focus on what you can control © Tourism Media Group.
