The Cultural Dining Experience Guests fly by helicopter into remote cultural lands, between the Kaimanawa and Kaweka Ranges known as Kai Waho. Guests can choose to either enjoy a walk through native beech forest to their lunch location or be dropped off directly by helicopter. Upon arrival, they meet host and chef Tom Laughlan, who has been hosting cultural experiences on his whakapapa (ancestral land) for more than 20 years. The experience begins with lighting the hangi pit and setting the large stones to heat. Guests enjoy drinks and stories of the local history of the area while the cooking stones heat to temperature. Guests then learn how to use ancestral methods to cook and prepare their own lunch with the guidance of Laughlan and his team. After lunch and some down time, guests are flown by helicopter back to Taupō. Patrick Dault joined Destination Great Lake Taupo as its new general manager this September. He replaced Jane Wilson who retired from the role in late April after many years at the helm. Dault has worked in the tourism industry for more than 20-years, in North America and New Zealand. For the past four years he has been destination and tourism manager for Development West Coast. "The undeniable value of business events is of strategic importance for the Taupo region, it enables the tourism sector to diversify our customer base; making the region more resilient to world events and seasonality,” Dault says. “As one of the region’s priorities for tourism development, DGLT sees the successful BE sector as a catalyst for future investment in the region, thus Louise Toulmin's ongoing activity in bringing the Taupo industry together but also enabling opportunities for BE events in the community,” he says. “Business events is one of the highest grossing segments in tourism, rivalled only by luxury, thus a lucrative but also very essential segment for the Taupo region. Taupo has an undeniable advantage in the luxury and incentive sector due to the tourism operators in the region that cater to these high-yield clientele. “I am very excited to join the fantastic team at DGLT as we unlock the full potential of the Taupo region in the business events sector.” NEWGMFORDGLT Patrick Dault [TAUPŌ [48] meeting newz [september october] 2024
