Business Events Industry Aotearoa’s chief executive is urging the sector to put away the term ‘service’ when describing what it does.

Speaking at a press conference during MEETINGS 2022 at TePae Christchurch Convention centre last week, Lisa Hopkins addressed the worldwide issue of staffing and ways to make people fell more inspired about working in the BE industry.

“We are a people industry, but that doesn't mean we are a service industry. The term ‘service’ doesn’t inspire, it doesn’t support aspiration. It definitely doesn’t allow for creativity and innovation.

“The people who work in business events are champions of the experiential economy – where alongside the natural environment, communities and infrastructure, people create experiences which touch the heart and bury themselves into the mind to encourage visitors to return.

“This feels like something the next gen of business events practitioners can own for themselves and truly have some fun with.”
