Celebrating decades of success

Tracey Thomas Tracey Thomas

Earlier this month was one of celebration for Tracey Thomas, managing director of Conference Innovators and board member of the Business Events Industry Aotearoa (BEIA). He not only celebrated 20 years in the business but also the release of ‘Piata Mai’ – BEIA’s National Strategic Direction document – a first for the industry.

Thomas was lured into the world of conferences following a successful career in hospitality management and hotel development in both Australasia and further abroad. He joined Conference Innovators (CI) in May 2004 and has been leading the way in the event and conference industry ever since.

A fountain of wisdom when it comes to thinking outside the box and creating new experiences and event masterpieces, Thomas’s drive and passion for the industry has helped CI become one of the leading PCOs in New Zealand, delivering a staggering number of conferences throughout Aotearoa and Australia every year.

Drawing on his extensive experience in the sector, Thomas specialises in putting together feasibilities, working extensively with Tourism New Zealand to assist with the preparation of international conference bids – more than ninety to date. Over the years, he has served on both the CINZ / BEIA boards and has been collaborating within a steering group on the creation and development of Piata Mai a 10-year outlook which identifies actions to unify and propel the industry towards a shared future.

“I’ve had a passion for the events industry for decades and, while it’s not all that hard to pull together an event, it’s quite another thing to bring people together to learn, share and celebrate business success in a meaningful and memorable way,” says Thomas. “Leading Conference Innovators has provided the opportunity to draw on my networks and expertise to shape the conferences and events we manage. My mahi with BEIA has strengthened my resolve to ensure a vibrant and unified future for such a rewarding industry – something I’m proud to say Piata Mai will positively influence now and for years to come, making it a personal career highlight and the sign of a maturing events industry.”

Even after 20 years, Thomas is not slowing down with future projects contracted beyond 2026.
